Manchester airport is the third largest airport in the UK, handling 28 million passengers each year.

In the first phase, Terminal 2 was refurbished with new DALI LED lighting throughout the building, to reduce energy consumption and improve the experience for passengers.

How we supported them

Calon worked with leading system integrator BEC Building Environment Controls to deliver a state-of–the-art DALI lighting control system, supplying LOYTEC L-DALI lighting controllers linked to DALI sensors for occupancy and constant-light control.

The lighting controls are integrated via BACnet to the airport’s BMS for the purpose of environment control. Uniquely, the system is also integrated with Manchester Airport’s flight control system, to automatically configure the airport lighting at each departure gate according to the flight departure and arrival schedules, time of day, and ambient light level.

This provides the airport with unrivalled flexibility, while assuring maximum energy saving by switching off lighting at gates which are out of use.

Ongoing airport lighting work

This successful roll-out was followed by upgrades to Terminals 1 and 3, then more recently by the ongoing extension and redevelopment of Terminal 2.  Over 12 years, Calon has supplied airport lighting controls for approximately 1,200 DALI channels at Manchester Airport, which equates to over 50,000 luminaires.

The same solution has been adopted for upgrades at both Stansted and East Midlands airports, which are also part of Manchester Airports Group.

Our Airport Lighting Control Solution features:

  • Occupancy, time-schedule and constant-light control for optimum passenger comfort.
  • Dynamic re-configuration of lighting in departure and arrival gate areas in response to gate assignment for maximum energy saving.
  • 1,200 DALI channels, over 50,000 lamps, over 360,000 BACnet points.
  • More than 75% energy saving compared to previous solution.
